Gilles Plains was a hay-growing district until the South Australian Housing Trust rolled out thousands of prefabricated imported-timber houses across the suburb between 1950 and 1954 to ease the post-war housing shortage. That mass-built mid-century stock still defines much of the streetscape, with later detached and semi-detached infill from the 1960s onwards and a steady run of recent rebuilds replacing the original timber cottages on the same small blocks.
That build history shows up in four issues we see across the area week after week. The first is corroded galvanised water pipework. The Housing Trust prefab cottages were originally plumbed with galvanised steel lines, and unrenovated homes still carry pipe runs that lose pressure and weep at the threads. The second is cracked and offset clay drainage. Sewer and stormwater lines laid through the 1950s and 1960s build-out used earthenware clay, and decades of ground movement on the reactive plains soils have pulled those joints apart along the older streets.
The third issue is ageing storage hot water systems. A large share of homes still run storage tanks fitted during 1970s and 1980s upgrades of the original Housing Trust stock, and many of those units are now well past typical replacement age. The fourth is older gas fittings. Original gas connections in the suburb's mid-century housing predate current standards, so cooker swaps, hot water replacements and kitchen renovations regularly turn up non-compliant runs that need bringing up to code.
Our team has worked across the City of Port Adelaide Enfield for years and knows the streets, the housing stock and the local patterns.
